LOCAL WORKSHOPS IN TURKEY

On November 30, 2021, the first NGSS through STEAM Local Workshop in Turkey was held online. The workshop lasting more than two hours has been carried out with a total of 56 participants who were teachers at Bahcesehir College being a private school and 14 public schools affiliated to Uskudar District Directorate of National Education (Uskudar MEM). In the workshop, a group of lecturer composed of Pelin Gerçeker, Dr. Zuhal Yılmaz Doğan, Cüneyt Dostoğlu, Benay Tümkaya and Mehmet Serkan Kal from Bahcesehir College  led various sessions related to the main topic, such as introductory parts on NGSS, STEAM, and SEL & Art Integration, highlights and conclusions from National Report, Joint Report and General Report, and conducted some warmer activities on SEL. At the end of the workshop, all participants were got involved in a fruitful question & answer session.

The second NGSS through STEAM Local Workshop with Exchange of Expert was held online, too, on 7th December 2021. It lasted again more than two hours and 69 participants from Uskudar MEM and Bahcesehir College joined the workshop. As a beginning session, Associate Professor Eyüp Sevimli, an instructor from Medeniyet University made a presentation upon the topic “Innovative STEAM Methods and Classroom Implementations”. Then, Dr. Maria Ampartztaki from the University of Crete conducted a session about Inquiry Based Learning. During her session, consecutive translation between English and Turkish was provided lest there emerged any circumstance that the participants fell short of the lecture. At the end, all participants took part in a productive question and answer session.

The next NGSS through STEAM Local Workshop took place on 23rd December 2021 at Validebağ Teacher’s Guesthouse. A total of 27 attendees from Bahcesehir College and Uskudar MEM participated wholeheartedly in this face-to-face workshop which lasted four hours. Dr. Zuhal Yılmaz Doğan, one of the lecturers, led two sessions throughout the workshop and touched firstly on the topics of Design Thinking, SCAMPER, Problem Based Learning, Montessori, IBL, Lesson Plan Analysis and Concept Map Preparation, and then, together with Cüneyt Dostoğlu, Benay Tümkaya and Mehmet Serhan Kal from Bahcesehir College, encapsulated STEAM methods, lesson plan formats for Design Thinking and Montessori and successful implementation of those in the classroom. After the coffee break, Uskudar MEM and Bahcesehir College made an introduction to AURESEL, its modules and website registration, and introduced a contest as a follow-up activity. At the end of the evaluation of contest and the workshop, certificates of participation were bestowed on the attendees.

On the 7th of January, the fourth NGSS through STEAM Local Workshop was realized with an online session lasting two hours. Teacher trainer Sündüz Yorgancılar led the session as the lecturer of the workshop. 27 participants in total from Uskudar MEM joined the session that Mrs. Yorgancılar took on the topic of SCAMPER Methods. In the wake of those local workshops, a post-evaluation questionnaire was employed to garner feedback from all participants upon the workshops.
